Dare to Be Different: How a Water Bottle Changed Everything

Dare to Be Different: How a Water Bottle Changed Everything

OISIZ Journal | March 2026

Some stories find you. You don't plan them. You don't design them. They just arrive — quietly, unexpectedly — and tell you exactly who you are.

This is one of those stories.

It Started With a Black Sheep

When we designed the little black sheep bottle, we weren't trying to make a statement. We just thought it was beautiful — one small black sheep standing in a field of white ones, quietly, confidently different.

We called it what we believed: Dare to be different.

We thought people would like it. We didn't know it would change us.

A Letter We Never Expected

Months after the black sheep bottle launched, a message arrived in our inbox.

It was from a parent.

Their child — who has autism — had fallen in love with the little black sheep bottle. Carried it everywhere. Refused to use anything else. But the lid had broken, and they were writing to ask: could they buy a replacement part?

Such a simple request. And yet, reading it, something shifted.

We thought about that child holding the bottle. Choosing it, out of everything, because something in that little black sheep spoke to them. A creature that was different. That stood out. That didn't apologize for it.

Dare to be different.

We had been saying those words for years. But in that moment, we finally understood what they meant.

A Connection Thirteen Years in the Making

What makes this story stranger — and more beautiful — is that it wasn't entirely new to us.

Back in 2013, our founder Irene was living in Beijing. She volunteered at an art auction fundraiser for children with autism, watching young artists present their work to the world. She saw the colors they chose. The worlds they built on paper. The way they saw things that others walked right past.

She didn't know, then, that she would one day build a brand.

She didn't know that brand would one day be called Dare to be different.

She didn't know that a letter from a parent, more than a decade later, would bring her back to that room in Beijing — and make everything click into place.

Meeting Stars and Rain

After that letter, we reached out to 星星雨 (Stars and Rain) — one of China's most respected autism education organizations, and the country's very first school dedicated to children with autism.

We asked if we could work together.

The answer was yes.

Together, we created a collection of products featuring the original artwork of children with autism. Every line, every color, every brushstroke — made by young artists who see the world differently, and more vividly, than most of us ever will.

We are donating 400 products to Stars and Rain's charity auction. Every dollar raised goes directly to the organization and the families they serve.

What We're Really Selling

We make water bottles. Beautiful ones, we hope — award-winning design, leak-proof lids, colors that make you feel something when you look at them.

But what we're really selling is a belief.

That being different isn't a flaw. It's a gift. It's a perspective the world needs.

The children who drew the artwork on these bottles — they don't think in straight lines. They think in colors, in feelings, in patterns that don't follow the rules. And because of that, they create things that are genuinely, breathtakingly original.

That's what Dare to be different means to us now.

Not a slogan. A commitment.

You Can Be Part of It

When you choose OISIZ, you're not just choosing a water bottle.

You're choosing to stand in a field of white sheep and say: I see the black one. And I think it's beautiful.

You're choosing to support artists who were told, in one way or another, that they didn't fit. And who made something extraordinary anyway.

You're choosing a brand that believes the world is better — more interesting, more human, more alive — when we make room for people who see it differently.

To the parent who wrote us that letter: thank you. You didn't know it, but you gave us the most important thing a brand can have — a reason.

To the children of Stars and Rain: your art is on our bottles now. Millions of people will hold your work in their hands every single day. We hope that makes you smile.
